Hello Friends and Colleagues:
Sorry that this message did not get top you sooner but I tried to
send it last week but as you may know there was a problem with the
listserv for a few days and I was not in the office yesterday.
It is time to rotate the BA-PIER meeting to the South Bay.
The next PIER meeting will be on Thursday, April 15 from 1:00pm -
3:00pm, at Menlo College in Atherton.
Virginia Spinelli will send info about the specific location,
directions and parking this week. Thanks for arranging this Virginia.
The next meeting is very important as it is time to nominate PIER
officers. As required in the bylaws all officer position are up for
election and nominations take place at the April meeting and the
elections by secret written ballot at the June meeting.
Some of the current officers want to or would agree to be nominated
again. They are:
Sean Day: Vice Chair and Membership;
Susan Sermeno: Treasurer;
Ligia Morcillo: List-Serve Manager.
Those Who Cannot Hold Office Again;
Jody O'Connor, Secretary.
As for me, I think it is time to allow others to get involved but I
will leave it up to you. I have been Chair for the past two years
and was Chair once before for two years.
Please think of who you would like to nominate including nominating
yourself. We don't mind some competition.
The positions and current officers are:
Arthur Levine, Foothill College, Chair
LevineArthur@fhda.edu
Sean Day, Las Positas College, Vice Chair (2009-10)
<mailto:sday@laspositascollege.edu>sday@laspositascollege.edu
Susan Sermeno, JFK University, Treasurer
ssermeno@jfku.edu
Jody O'Connor, California Institute of Integral Studies, Secretary
joconnor@ciis.edu
LigiaMorcillo, List-Serve Manager., Diablo Valley College (I guess I
am in trouble now. Ligia was never elected. I appointed her when
Kevin Long left UCB. She has been great)

Agenda Items:
I know that there is a tremendous interest on a session about
preparing for SEVIS II. As there are at least three SEVIS II
sessions scheduled for the conference in Kansas City I think we
should hold off from doing anything at PIER until after the
conference in Kansas City. The June PIER is on the 17th and
hopefully there will be time after the KC Conference to prepare a
presentation for PIER. We may want to devote the entire June meeting
to the election and SEVIS II. What do you think about this idea?
So now back to the April 15 PIER meeting. I know that we had a PIER
meeting in February and had the NAFSA Region XII Northern District
Conference on March 29 but I would like to see a good turn out at the
April meeting due to nominations and to show the importance of PIER
to our Menlo hosts.
I would like to hear from you regarding your suggestions for agenda
items for the April meeting. Please try to let me know by April 8.
If you would like it I can see if I can arrange a presentation about
NAFSA Advocacy Day that I attended on March 16 and 17. Several of
our colleagues for Northern California attended Advocacy Day and I
would like to see if they will present if you are interested.
I look forward to hearing from you about agenda items and potential
nominations.

Hello Colleagues,
I am looking forward to welcoming you to the Saint Mary's campus next
Thursday, February 18th from 1 - 3. Our meeting will be held in the Claeys'
Lounge at the Soda Center. I have attached a campus map for your
information and have included directions to the campus below.
If you would like to arrive early and eat on campus, we have a full service
student cafeteria (Oliver Hall) where your meal should be approx. $5. There
is also Café Louis which serves deli sandwiches and Starbucks coffee drinks.
As you enter the campus, take a left turn after the guard station and follow
the road around campus toward the hills. The Soda Center is located next to
McKeon Pavillion (where the GAELS play!) and there is a parking lot between
McKeon and Soda where you can park. If you cannot find a space there,
please search in other lots near the Center. Parking is FREE and generally
easy to find.
If you have a GPS in your car, you can enter the address below:
Saint Mary's College of California
1928 Saint Mary's Road
Moraga, CA 94556
From San Francisco Bay Bridge or San Rafael/Richmond Bridge:
From San Francisco Bay Bridge or San Rafael/Richmond Bridge: Take Highway
580 toward Hayward and then Highway 24 toward Walnut Creek. Once through the
Caldecott Tunnel, take the second exit which will be marked Orinda/Moraga.
Turn right and follow Moraga Way about five miles. Turn left onto Moraga
Road, then right onto Saint Mary's Road. The College is about one mile
farther on the right.
From Walnut Creek/Highway 680:
Take Highway 24 west (Oakland direction) to the Central Lafayette exit and
bear to the right, circling under the highway. At the second stoplight take
a right onto Mt. Diablo Boulevard. At the next stoplight take a left onto
Moraga Road. You will want to be in the left hand lane. Make a left onto
Saint Mary's Road. Follow this road for about four miles; the College will
be on the left.
See you next week.

Hello My Friends:
The next meeting of BA-PIER will be held on Thursday,
February 18 from 1:00pm - 3:00pm at St. Mary's College College of California in
Moraga. Susie Miller Reid will send directions, parking info, exact location
etc about one week before the meeting. The Agenda also will be sent around that
time.
I would appreciate it if you would send me suggestions for
discussion at the meeting by Tuesday, February 9 and whether or not you would
like to lead the discussion on the topics you recommend. Please, Please,
Please send me topics for discussion.
One Agenda item is already
set. There will be a presentation about the ITEP, International Test of English
Proficiency for evaluating English as A Second Language ability. For those of
you unfamiliar with ITEP it is an alternative to TOEFL and IELTS. It is
available in many places throughout the world including the USA. If you wish
you can offer the exam on your campus and get results very quickly. Foothill
offers it on its campus. For those of you that are "old-timers" in the field
you may remember Parandeh Kia. She was one of out gurus in immigration
advising for many years but is now Director, Institutional Relations of the ITEP
program. Parandeh will be making the presentation.
One matter that I
feel needs discussion is the issue of the rules, regulations, time deadlines,
grace periods and procedures for transfer of schools for F-1's
that:
graduated form their previous school and want to transfer to a new
school;
have not graduated but are between terms of their current
school;
want to transfer during a term in which they are currently
enrolled;
are completing OPT and want to transfer to a new school or return
to the former school for a new program.
I have found that there are a
variety of opinions about how these matters should be handled. Do you think
this should be discussed?
So let me hear from you about other topics for
discussion.

Expanding the Circle: Creating and
Inclusive Environment for LGBTQ Students and Studies
February 25-28,
2010I am very pleased to announce
that CIIS is sponsoring a national higher education conference: Expanding the Circle: Creating and
Inclusive Environment for LGBTQ Students and Studies to be held
at the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco, February 25-28,
2010.
This conference will address
factors that have contributed to excluding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
and queer (LGBTQ) issues from academic study and student life; and also explore
strategies to make our campuses more inclusive for all students. We will examine
strategies and best practices that effectively integrate LGBTQ areas of teaching
and research with student life activities. This will be among the first national
conferences in higher education to focus on LGBTQ concerns by seeking
connections across diversities, disciplines, and academic and student
affairs.
As you will see on the website,
the conference is primarily directed toward higher education, mainly the
academic and the student life areas. Please let our colleagues in student
services know about this conference. http://expandingthecircle.com/

As you may know, the next PIER meeting will be held at Las Positas College in
Livermore on Thursday, December 3rd from 1pm-3pm.
DIRECTIONS: http://www.laspositascollege.edu/about/directions.php
I need some input about the agenda.
Often, after a NAFSA Conference, we spend part of the meeting reviewing some of
the important news and developments from the conference. This may be especially
important for the December meeting because many of our members may not have been
able to attend the Region XII Conference in October.
Whether or not you
attended the conference, I would like to know if you are interested in having
presentations and discussions about news and developments from the conference.
There were several presentations by SEVP and Cal Svc Center Officials which also
included a direct line to SEVP in Washington, DC and immediate responses to
questions.
Also, if any of you that attended the conference would be
willing to make a presentation about a particular area please let me know.
If you have suggestions for other meeting agenda items please let me
know. I understand that the topics and presentations at the meeting in Sept 09
were well received.
Please respond soon so that I can develop and
agenda of items that are useful and not too boring.
